Microdermabrasion Specialist
Steven Popkow, MD has expertise in the microdermabrasion procedure, which he performs routinely at his practice, Skin Laser Center in Mar Vista, California. A widely popular skin care technique, Microdermabrasion removes the outer layers of dry, dead skin cells and leaves patients feeling refreshed, as they leave the office with glowing, younger-looking skin.

Microdermabrasion Q & A

What happens during the procedure?

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure in which medical professionals use crystals or powders to exfoliate the skin. But in his practice, Dr. Popkow has eliminated the crystals and powders, offering patients a gentler micro-exfoliation system that’s hassle-free, safer, and more sanitary than those that use crystal machines. In addition to giving the skin a healthy glow, exfoliation from microdermabrasion can help improve the appearance of age spots, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.

During the procedure, Dr. Popkow uses a diamond cut wand — typically on the face, neck, chest, and arms — to gently exfoliate the skin with mild suction pressure. It’s a simple 15-30 minute procedure that requires no anesthesia. The outermost layer of dead skin cells is discharged, revealing a layer of vibrant, healthy skin underneath. Mild redness is normal after the procedure and usually disappears quickly.

Am I a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

Dr. Popkow typically recommends microdermabrasion for relatively minor skin conditions. These might include fine lines, enlarged pores, blemishes, and dull skin, as well as mild case of acne scars, pigmentation, uneven skin tone, or skin texture issues. Patients with rosacea or minor acne scarring may also see results from microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion isn’t normally used as a treatment for sagging skin or deep facial creases and folds.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

Prior to the procedure, be sure to avoid using Retin A or acid peels that will leave your skin feeling sensitive. Wear sunscreen when you’re outdoors and avoid extended sun exposure.

When will I see results?

Microdermabrasion patients will usually see an immediate positive impact on their skin after the first treatment. For the best long-term results, Dr. Popkow recommends at least six treatments every four weeks. The sustained treatment will leave your skin feeling fresh, clean, and invigorated.

Are there any side effects?

There are usually no side effects, however it’s important to note that when side effects do occur they are often mild and brief. Care should be taken not expose skin to excessive sun exposure. Zinc oxide (SPF 30 or higher) sunscreen is recommended post procedure. Also, there’s generally no downtime postprocedure. Most patients can resume everyday activities immediately with no restrictions.
