Acne is a commonplace skin issue that affects about 85% of young adults. Some adults may have acne well into their 30’s and 40’s, and women tend to have more acne than men. It is characterized by pimples that stem from pores being clogged by oil, bacteria, and skin cells. The condition is often caused or made worse by the overproduction of oil by the skin’s oil glands. Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting around 50 million people annually. Dr. Popkow will be able to instruct on proper acne treatment and products.
Acne scarring is usually genetically linked to a person’s response to inflammation. That’s why some people scar easily and others might maintain a normal complexion even through bouts with acne.
Laser treatments can be used on acne scars on the face, chest, or back, and works on various skin tones, from light to dark. Acne scars vary, with some being depressed and others appearing wavelike or raised. The kind of acne scars you have determine how effective the laser treatments will be, so the best way to know if you’re a candidate is to make an appointment with Dr. Popkow for an evaluation.
Dr. Popkow uses the Palomar Q-YAG 5 laser system, which emits short pulses of micro-fine light that reach beneath the skin surface, treating the skin’s deeper layer. These short, high-intensity pulses of light help incite the body’s natural healing process, removing damaged skin tissue and allowing the skin to rebuild the needed collagen and elastin, which give healthy-looking skin its structure.
Dr. Popkow recommends multiple treatments with time between treatment sessions to allow the skin to revitalize and rejuvenate back to a more uniform texture. Each session typically takes 30 minutes, depending on how large of an area the scarring covers.
Treatment is usually well tolerated and no anesthetic is typically needed. Possible side effects may occur such as itching, or hyper or hypo pigmentation (changes in skin color). Dr. Popkow will discuss these with you before you decide if the treatment is right for you. Most of Dr. Popkow’s patients resume normal, everyday activities directly following the procedure. Zinc oxide SPF 33 is highly recommended to prevent further sun damage.
